AT&T Randall Stephenson Keynote from NXTcomm June 19, 2007

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson discussed the migration from fixed to wireless. 1) He discussed how mobility was the message, voice, entertainment, broadband is the promised land and movement towards it continues to accelerate. 2) A critical key is the ability to use any device for mobility. 3) Entertainment must be available to you. 4) Customers are generating the interest in content, and they call the shots.
According to Stephenson, wireless must be the universal feature for the dream to come true. It’s a very personalized purchase.
To meet this demand, AT&T will be wireless centric. A core beginning for AT&T will be the iPhone. It’s limited only to AT&T, and they believe its a game changer, not only for the company, but also for the entire industry. The company has more than 1 million customers interested, and 40% are not AT&T customers.
A second key for AT&T will be ubiquitous wireless. GSM coverage remains a key aspect, as does Wi-Fi hot spots. DSL customers are getting free Wi-Fi in their homes as a bonus offer next month.
Video sharing will be a great service. AT&T is opening its new AT&T service in Atlanta, San Antonio and Dallas next month. The month following it will roll out to more than 100 cities. Customer demand for video has been a big driver. AT&T’s backbone’s now increasingly IP based to enable video. IPTV is where it’s going. Quality’s good, and customer response is phenomenal. AT&T will have 18 million subs by the end of next week. They’re moving as fast as they can deploy fiber. Wireless will drive business usage, too. Particularly in SME.
