A (Weird) New World? June 12, 2007

The social networking thing is much more Geoff’s bailiwick, and this isn’t a straight ICT issue, but something caught my eye today over at Strange Maps blog.

Check out the bizarre, delightful World Map of Online Communities:
what a wonderful world

I find it especially cool that we’re beginning to see a sense of the “geography” aspect of social networking, whether through corporate and political colonization of those spaces or through more direct conceptualizing like this.

I haven’t been the only one to compare this era to an earlier time in world exploration. Now it seems the metaphor is taking on a whole new dimension.

Update: it looks like this map really could catch on. Is this the new Encarta?
